Source | 2/06/11: Embrace my planet – the campaign to support renewables
Wind turbines are beautiful.
There, we went ahead and said it. And now we want you to say it too.
The UK’s annual festival of wind energy, Wind Week, is coming up on June 12th-19th. Energy from wind and other renewables is rapidly becoming part of everyday life, and we want to celebrate this fact, while giving as many people as possible the chance to see the beauty of wind turbines.
There’s more about wind farm week here….

Great ideas, products and marketing support from people who understand your field of expertise
What we can do for you:
- Websites, hosting and search engine optimisation (SEO)
- Copywriting
- Business stationery design and print
Some examples of our work:
Derbyshire Counselling: successful counselling practice based in Derby and in Matlock
NewBlue designed and built Derbyshire Counselling’s website. We also designed and printed a range of business stationery.
Gerry’s efficiency and attention to detail made the creation of my website a smooth process. Most importantly for me, he has an understanding of the field in which I work.
Jim Walker: independent psychotherapist, family court expert and play therapist
We updated the design and content of Jim Walker’s website. Copy was rewritten to focus on prospective clients.
The site was also optimised for search engine traffic: from a marginal presence, Jim Walker now dominates most of the top pages in Google. This has led to Jim picking up a number of new clients.
Gerry’s work is detailed, professional and creative. He has many ideas of his own, whilst also being able to integrate my own thinking and wishes.
PJ Counselling: new counselling practice based in Norfolk, run by Paul Junge
We provided content for Paul Junge’s Counselling Directory profile and also copy for his new website.
The content is based on Paul Junge’s approach and personality. It also focuses on his personal values and those of his practice: the only way in our opinion, to produce authentic and meaningful copy.

Marketing can appear an uncomfortable area for practitioners working in the caring profession. But counsellors can attract greater client numbers by using marketing techniques, if as with any other small business owner; they base their marketing approach on their values.
As with all individuals who work for themselves, counsellors should:
1. Determine their unique position in their particular market
2. Work out the best way they are to connect with prospective clients. For example, are they to base their marketing approach on networking and personal recommendation, or is their approach simply to be based on promotional media, such as a website or on flyers and brochures
3. Understand how they are to build a profitable, sustainable business
Experienced counsellors tell me that they tend to use a balanced marketing approach that includes a mix of networking, recommendation and promotional tools. With regard to promotional tools, most say, a website that is highly ranked in Google’s organic searches is key, followed by entries on directory sites – as long as these are also well positioned on Google. Printed material, such as leaflets come next.
1. It is more beneficial to have a website that is well positioned for Google searches, than having an expensively designed site. It is therefore important to check that your website developer is skilled in using the latest coding techniques – these are generally more Google friendly. My advice is to also ask if your chosen web company sub-contracts work overseas. Sites built overseas can look OK, but they are invariably based on out of date development methods.
2. Directory entries should be well written and client focused, prose should not based on the counsellor but on the counsellor’s clients.
3. Leaflets should be simple and easy to read. Contact details should be prominent. Don’t be afraid to be different.

Advertising Standards Authority reveals the 10 most complained about UK adverts in 2010
Cardell Media make it to number 8 with 185 complaints

This mailing consisted of a torn magazine or newspaper page with a handwritten Post-it note, which stated “Hi, I saw this and thought you’d find it useful – he’s really good! J”. Complainants objected that the mailing was masquerading as personal correspondence and challenged claims being made within it. We upheld the complaints and told the advertiser to change their approach.

What happens when your business grows to the extent where you personally don’t have enough time to devote to marketing?
Perhaps you can’t get around to blogging or tweeting, or you are so busy servicing customers you can’t put in the time to develop a new website that reflects your changing business, or your leaflets are out of date and show the wrong phone number? Maybe you have created a marketing plan but just don’t have time to review and monitor the effectiveness of your chosen activities.
Although small business owners often handle marketing activities, dealing effectively with service providers of social media, design, web, copy and print can become very time consuming as a business grows.
Unless you are entirely reliant on word of mouth, if you don’t keep up to date with marketing, your business will suffer. The customer perception of an out of date website or an abandoned blog is more likely to be that they think you have ceased trading rather than you are “too busy for this”, and your sales pipeline can kick into reverse.
Perhaps this is the time to consider hiring a marketing professional to help you plan, execute and monitor your promotion. An experienced marketer will also be able to provide strategic input into your planning. Here are the options to consider in the light of your requirements, your budgets and longer term objectives.
1. Hire a marketing consultant
A consultant can be taken on to review the whole of the marketing process. Consultants advise on a range of high level issues from pricing strategy to sales training, customer retention, referral programmes, joint ventures, product development, database strategy and everything else involved in selling products to customers.
A marketing consultant will be experienced in working strategically with a range of professionals in the industry. For instance they could help you develop a new advertising campaign and then track it and optimise it for maximum effectiveness. They should regularly analyse the key metrics for your business and look for ways to improve them.
2. Hire an agency
A marketing agency may offer strategic advice, and provide hands on execution of marketing activity. The advantages of an agency are that they can offer economies of scale and have made strategic investment in media industry databases or have in-house expertise in different areas of marketing – public relations or digital marketing for example.
An agency can be a good choice where it offers a specialist experience in your particular sector. They will be well-versed in successful campaigns, and have all the right contacts at their disposal. You can use them when you need them or you can retain the services of an account manager to co-ordinate a sustained campaign.

Here’s an interesting article from NewBlue client, managingchange.
I heard an interesting comment recently – no one wakes up in the morning saying “I must get a coach”. That’s probably true. Certainly when I was in corporate life I never uttered those words. Yet when an executive coach was appointed to work with me it provided a landmark point in my career.

The Scottish government has approved plans to build the world’s largest tidal energy project of its kind in the seas off Islay.

It is estimated the 10 turbines will generate enough electricity to power more than 5,000 homes.
Here’s the video and a little more information on this renewable project.

Having just watched The Social Network for the third time, perhaps it was the fourth. What strikes me, is that not only will this film last longer in our shared consciousness than the more highly awarded ‘ The Kings Speech’, but how simple it was for its subject, the social marketing product, Facebook to become successful. And surely, the key to its success, lies in the fact that it is a product that others like, need and therefore want.
It is apparent that too many businesses offer products and services that others do not want; thinking that the solution to their lack of sales or clients solely rests with their marketing.
So, here’s my advice, before embarking with your promotional marketing, consider how your product or service is thought of by your prospective clients. Do your research and get your product or service right first.
